Q:I really liked your post about adjectives to use instead of the disorder. I just disagree for the "depressed". God knows I am aware it is a horrible mental illness, but it's also actually an emotion, so it can be used as such. The other ones are well on point though :)
I don’t disagree with you. In the case of “depressed” I’m not against it being used to describe an emotional state separate from a mental illness. I just get a bit ticked off when people use it lightly. Like really you’re “depressed” because your fave isn’t doing well on Big Brother? You sure you’re not just disappointed, but generally doing okay?
But there are certainly no hard rules. That’s why I made sure to use the phrasing “might work better” instead of DO THIS INSTEAD I COMMAND YOU knowhatimsayin.
I’ve been seeing posts recently with the message that diagnosable disorders are not/should not be used carelessly as adjectives.
I know people who have told me that this sort of thing really doesn’t bother them, and I certainly won’t tell people what should or shouldn’t offend them. However it’s a sentiment that makes sense to me. From my perspective, when these words are used frivolously, they lose their meaning. This can belittle the experiences of people who live with these conditions. And while they should not be stigmatized, they should be treated with seriousness and respect.
These graphics provide suggestions for alternative adjectives. Shifting your vocabulary does take a bit of effort, but it’s really not as difficult as people make it out to be. It’s not about self-policing so much as having an arsenal of alternative words that are more accurate anyway.
Also I hadn’t done anything visually creative in a while and I wanted to do a thing.
(PS The graphics are supposed to represent the alternative adjectives, not necessarily the disorders).
(PPS This isn’t something I think there’s necessarily a right or wrong side to be on and I’m not telling you what to do honestly and my ask is open if you want to disagree with me actively)
yooooo so apparently I was accidentally ignoring a whole bunch of people I must have clicked the ignore button thinking it was the delete message button i shift the blame onto tumblr for making the ignore button look like a delete message button and placing it in a location where it’s more prominent than the actual delete button but ANYWAY if you were messaging me and I was ignoring you officially I was actively ignoring you but not on purpose and I’M SORRY.
I had the honour of being tagged by plantdevotee to do a thing where you basically answer a bunch of questions and I’m honoured to be tagged (see above) but also the post is long so the content is under a cut colon close parentheses face.
P.S. Can you believe I’m actually posting something here it’s been months probably like wow who actually uses their tumblr to post things on their “main” blog.
