If you are positioned horizontally, say on a bed, then you are lying in bed. If it happened in the past then you lay in bed, or were lying in bed. You are not laying in bed (nor were you laying in bed imperfect past tense) unless you are putting something down on your bed, you are at sea and you are navigating from your bed on board your seafaring vessel, you are not a mammal and are laying eggs on your bed, or you are having sex on your bed. Even in those examples you should have an object following your verb, except for the nautical one, but why are you at sea?

Essentially my point is this. We have gifs  admonishing people for their incorrect your/you’re usage. We have drawings of alots so that we can imagine the ferocious alot of fire. Can we please begin to have a conversation about the horrendous and ubiquitous misuse of the word lay?
